Scholarships and Bursaries
Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) Industry Funded Scholarships
WASM offers a selection of scholarships and bursaries for undergraduate students. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic ability and the motivation of students to pursue a mining related career. School leavers who expect a high TER (>95) or its equivalent are eligible to apply providing they wish to enrol in any WASM's Bachelor of Engineering courses (including double degrees).
A limited number of bursaries may be available to students who do not hold a scholarship and can show financial need. Bursaries range from $1000-$5000 for one year.
These awards place no restriction on graduates in their ultimate choice of employment. Awards offered by mining companies may include vacation employment. Other students may seek vacation employment through direct contact with mining companies, the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA or the Minerals Tertiary Education Council.

WA Mining Club Scholarships
In 2003 the WA Mining Club launched a major education initiative by offering a single university scholarship to encourage young people going into the mining industry. The majority of our past winners have come from the School of Mines. This year we will be increasing the number of available scholarships to four per year, with each scholarship covering an area of specialization. These scholarships will be co-funded by industry partners.
Valued at $10,000 over two years, this is an excellent scholarship to apply for.

Applications close 30 September 2008

Information about Sponsoring a Scholarship
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholastic ability and motivation to pursue a career in the mining industry, as assessed from a written application and interview. Awardees usually have a Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) of at least 96. Scholarship application forms are included in the WASM course booklet, which is widely distributed to high schools through career evenings and mail-outs. Applications close in February and awards are made in March/April.
Typically scholarships are only available to Engineering students and not Science students, however it is ultimately the sponsoring company's choice which course the scholarship is for. Students in Double degrees only receive the scholarship for the first four years of the course unless the company approves payment for the 5th year.
Sponsorships are committed on a one-off basis and have to be committed by January 31st for allocation that year. Each scholarship terminates once a student completes their course and the sponsoring company is then given the option of renewal.
These awards place no restriction on graduates in their ultimate choice of employment. Awards offered by mining companies may include vacation employment and we encourage sponsors to provide company mentors for their recipients during the course of the scholarship.
