Focus on Mining Camp

Each year WASM runs a Focus on Mining Camp aimed at Year 12 TEE Science and Maths students who are considering studying mining-related courses at university, and are interested in working in the mining industry.
The event consists of a 5 day camp, commencing at Curtin University, Bentley and progressing to Curtin’s WASM Kalgoorlie campus during the July school holidays. This all-expenses-paid experience introduces participants to the mining industry and what it has to offer. During the camp, students' tour operational mine sites, participate in hands-on workshops on campus, and meet lecturers, students and mining industry leaders. They may even be able to experience mine site life by staying overnight on sites.
In 2009 sites visited included the Forrestania and Kambalda nickel operations, Avoca’s Higginsville gold mine, KCGM’s Superpit, Rio Tinto’s Evaluation, Planning and Innovation Centre and of course the metallurgy and mining engineering departments at WASM’s Kalgoorlie Campus. Alongside past WASM graduates, CME joined the participants for an informal dinner and had a great opportunity to promote the sector to these students.
WASM’s Marketing and PR Coordinator, Karyn Lovatsis has attributed much of the success of this event to the supportive nature of the sector. Past WASM graduates have assisted in organising site visits, and the resources industry contributes significantly to its cost. As a result all transportation costs, accommodation, food and other expenses are completely covered for all participants.
